The Protect Oakland Kids campaign focused on changing public perceptions, but it became clear that a different effort was needed to reach teenage victims. Working with young survivors, we crafted culturally informed messages to encourage the youth to call the National Human Trafficking Resource Center (NHTRC).
We advertised on bus shelters along the tracks where victims are exploited (gaining 6.2 million views). The effort led to a huge uptick in calls for help and reports of human trafficking in Alameda County. Calls from San Diego, Los Angeles, and Sacramento increased 3x. Oakland’s reports increased 12-18x. According to the NHTRC, this has been the most successful anti-trafficking campaign in the nation to date.
